Solar Eclipse and beliefs

Recently, we in India witnessed solar eclipse on 15th of January 2010 to be precise and some other countries also seen this celestial event that occurs every year in different parts of the world. Solar eclipse lasted about 3 and 1/2 hours. Even before the day arrived every astrologer in all news papers warned people about possible consequences that might happen during solar eclipse. Solar eclipse occurs when Moon is coming between Sun and Earth casting shadow on the Earth when they are in the same plane. Like this, Lunar eclipse occurs when Earth comes between Sun and Moon casting shadow on the moon when all of them are in the same plane. Most of the people were afraid to walk on the streets and even take food during solar eclipse fearing indigestion and curse of god.( Same myths and blind beliefs are carried during Lunar eclipse too ) After solar eclipse most of them took bath to get rid of the sin. Even learned people were following all rituals to avoid curse of the god. Yes! there are few precautions we have to take during solar eclipse. If we want to see solar eclipse we can wear special goggles or smoky film to avoid harmful radiation attacking retina of our eyes. Foetus in the womb of pregnant women might be affected by harmful rays emanating from the sun if they expose themselves during solar eclipse. But stories and myths were ruling the roost and people had so many blind beliefs. They were really afraid even to drink water during solar eclipse and took food 2 hours before solar eclipse due to fear of indigestion. They took bath after solar eclipse was over. Still, in this 21st century people are infected with myths and blind beliefs about solar eclipse which is just another celestial event occurs during every year. |
